These graphs show the portion of the electromagnetic spectrum known as the UV (Ultra-violet), visible and IR (infrared) light energy. The UV range is typically defined as the range between visible violet light and X rays (wavelength from about 100 to 400 nanometers). Below 150nm there is no effective transmission by quartz. The visible range is 400 to 750 nanometers. The IR range begin with wavelengths greater than that of red visible light (750nm) and extends to 1,000,000 nanometers. This calculator shows typical values. It assumes normal incident light on a polished surface. Under such condition there is 3-4% reflected loss at each surface. Therefore, the maximum transmission at any wavelength is approximately 92%. The surface reflection may change with surface treatment or coatings. |

CAUTION: Transmission values for wavelength greater than 4000 nm may be inconsistent. The values shown are based on actual transmission measurements. However, for thick samples, strong IR absorption due to vibration of the silica network produces results with large uncertainty.
